The Richard D. Navies Scholarship |
|
|
|
|
The Richard D. Navies Scholarship was established
in 2006 by NFL veteran Hannibal Navies to honor the commitment and vision of
his father, former chairman of the country’s first high school Black Studies
Department. Designed to provide two outstanding African-American high school
student-athletes in the area San Francisco/Oakland Bay who demonstrate passion
for leadership and social responsibility, each recipient is eligible
for a one-time
scholarships award of up to $2,500. Funds may be used for college tuition,
books and school-related fees and will be disbursed directly to the respective
Financial Aid Offices of the recipients’ school of acceptance.
The
2008 application deadline is May 29th.

ELIGIBILITY
& APPLICATION:
Through this award, the Foundation seeks to foster
collegiate opportunities for youth who have the vision, but not necessarily the
means, to pursue higher education. This year, two students will be awarded
one-time scholarships of $2,500 to attend the college or university of their
choice. Funds may be used for tuition, books and school-related fees and will
be disbursed directly to the respective Financial Aid Offices of the
recipients’ school of acceptance.
To be eligible
for the Richard D. Navies Scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a citizen or legal resident of the United States
- Be a senior in high school graduating in May/June
2008.
- Attend a San Francisco Bay area high school.
- Be a current-year varsity athlete.
- Have a high school academic average of 2.5 or
better.
- Minimum ACT Score of 20 or Minimum SAT score
of 900
- Demonstrate leadership and commitment to
service through in-school or community programs.
- Exhibit good sportsmanship and a positive
attitude.
To Apply
Applications must be received or postmarked by May 29th, 2008 and include the following:
- The Richard D. Navies Scholarship Application.
- A personal essay, as described in the
application.
- Two letters of recommendation from a teacher,
supervisor, guidance counselor or school official dated no earlier than January
1, 2008. Please note that family members may not submit a letter
of recommendation on a student’s behalf.
